Restorative Justice

HWBIDCo delivers an innovative Restorative Justice scheme in High Wycombe town centre, targeting young first-time offenders.

Monthly sessions are delivered by experienced Family Intervention officers from Bucks County Council.  Young offenders are brought in with a parent or guardian to address their actions.  Discussion includes their motivation and the consequences of their actions.

Attendance at the session allows us to keep them out of the criminal justice system for a first offence and hopefully to prevent a repeat, or escalation, in bad behaviour.  We have a 99% track record of preventing re-offending and in the process save the taxpayer almost £6,000 per person in terms of prosecution costs.

The young people that attend the sessions are banned collectively from the participating stores in the town for six months and their details are recorded for monitoring.  Those that refuse to attend the session are referred to the Police.

We are in the process of investing in the session materials, enrolling more stores and investigating the potential to roll-out this initiative in other areas of the Thames Valley.

We want to recruit more stores, involve more schools and visit more areas in the Thames Valley.
